Dead Mountain, written by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, is based on a true story. This book is also number four in the Nora Kelly series, but it reads just fine as a stand-alone. Even if you haven’t read any of the other Nora Kelly books, you will enjoy this one and not be lost at all.
In this novel, we find out that nine mountaineers did not return from a winter backpacking trip in 2008. Searchers found a strange scene at their campsite. Apparently, something truly terrifying had appeared at the door of their tent, causing them to slash their way out of the back of their tent and run barefoot toward certain death. Not all of the bodies were recovered, and some of those bodies were missing eyes and crushed. The case was given the name “Dead Mountain” by the FBI. It was never solved.
In the current time frame, two more bodies have been found in a cave. FBI Agent Corrie Swanson teams up with mentor Supervisory Special Agent Clay Sharpe and archaeologist Nora Kelly to investigate. It seems there are lots of questions with no answers. There might be a cover-up of the facts that leads all the way up, maybe even to the White House. The investigation is squashed much to the dismay of Swanson, Sharpe and Kelly.
Nothing is going to stop them from carrying on their search for the truth. As they begin to search for answers on their own, their very lives become at risk. Just what is the government and military trying to hide?
I found this book to be a fairly quick read. The characters are well-developed, and the story can easily stand alone from the series. Dead Mountain is an exciting story. It is well worth the time to read it.
