It’s the 1940s, and Arthur is a high school sophomore, living in small-town Mason where everyone knows everyone else’s business. While Arthur seems content in Mason, his older brother Frank can’t wait to leave—taking his girlfriend with him. Frank is an aspiring author, and Arthur admires him for his easy way with girls. But don’t expect Frank’s girlfriend to be another student.
Arthur is enamored with Nola, a fellow student, but Nola sees him as a friend and tells Arthur that she has a crush on Frank. Arthur is one of those rare people who doesn’t become resentful of this fact, but instead he focuses on listening to Nola and being her friend. For Arthur is a good listener as he proves while doing odd jobs for older women in the town.
Arthur’s family is struggling because his father’s business of delivering milk is on the decline. This struggle helps to create conflict within the family. Frank seems to like to aggravate his dad whenever he gets a chance. However, the family dynamic is upheaved by tragedy.
This book is full of wonderful secondary characters and is quite insightful. It is a nice gentle read. If you’ve never read about Arthur Truluv in the Mason series, you need to know that this book can stand alone. By the time you finish reading it, you will want to read the other books. Quite enjoyable!
