James Patterson is up to his usual tricks in the novel “Hush” which was co-written with Candice Fox. This book is the fourth one in the series “Harriet Blue.” However, this book can be read as a stand alone if you’ve never read any of the other books in the series.
The book opens with former cop Harriet “Harry” Blue in prison where she fights for her life and experiences a prison-wide lockdown. So she is not expecting to be approached by Deputy Police Commissioner Joe Woods. What does he want? He wants help in finding his missing daughter and granddaughter. Woods promises to reduce some of Harry’s charges and have her released early if she agrees to find them. Joining Harry on her quest are her former partners Tox Barnes and Edward “Whit” Whittacker. They are currently suspended and/or on leave. Unknown to Woods, Harry is also looking into the murder of the prison doctor.
This a fast-paced book with Patterson’s signature short chapters and great readability. Authors Fox and Patterson present several red herrings along the way. With two distinct cases to solve, Harry has her hands full. The search takes her and her partners all around Sydney, Australia. They deal with all types of folks from lawyers to drug-dealing bikers.
We get some background information on Harry’s partner Tox Barnes, who does a lot of the work behind the scenes. We also get a glimpse into Whit’s feelings for Harry. Also in the mix is Harry’s old boss who is now retired. These characters are all well-defined and, indeed, may be more of a strength in this book than plot although the plot is an action-packed ride.
If you haven’t dipped your toe into this series yet, it is well worth your time to try it now. It’s a long summer, and this book may be just the diversion you are looking for. Happy reading!
