Simply Lies

Simply Lies is a thriller of a book from author David Baldacci. It is a stand-alone novel full of plot twists and remarkable characters. If you are looking for a fast-paced mystery, this book is it!

Mickey Gibson, a former Jersey City detective, is a single mother of two, working from home for an investigation company that hunts down tax and creditor cheats. She receives an unusual assignment where she must visit the mansion of an arms dealer. When she gets there, she discovers a dead and decomposing body. Mickey finds out that nothing is at it seems. The arms dealer is not really a dealer but instead a man with mob ties who was in Witness Protection. He stole a lot of money. Also, the person who gave her the assignment does not work at the investigation company at all.

Mickey quickly becomes a suspect in the murder of the mob guy. While she is trying to prove her innocence, she is contacted by the woman who gave her the assignment in the first place. She goes by many names, including Clarissa. This mysterious woman encourages Mickey to find the real killer and to locate the lost money. Mickey and Clarissa have apparently met in the past, but Mickey doesn’t remember when.

Clarissa is a blackmailer and manipulator. She manages to convince Mickey that working together is the best path forward to clearing Mickey’s name and finding the money. They race to find the answers they need in a game of cat and mouse.

Simply Lies is well written, fast moving, and well plotted. The characters are fully developed. The plot moves seamlessly and intertwines beautifully. A great suspenseful mystery that is greatly entertaining.
