If you are looking for a thriller with plenty of twists and turns, get your hands on The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins. This novel is a fast ride through generations of lies with lots of weaving through different timelines and perspectives.
In the 1940s, the young daughter of a rich couple disappears in the mountains during a picnic. She is later found in another state and is returned to her family. This daughter, Ruby, grows up to have a secret past that is slowly revealed through a series of letters she has written. After her death, her heir Cam McTavish, an adopted son, is summoned home. He and his wife Jules are not welcomed as everyone else in the family wants the McTavish fortune. Just what will they do to get it?
Ruby’s complicated past (she has been widowed four times) shows that a privileged life does not mean that tragedy will be avoided simply due to having money. The inheritance she leaves behind slices through the family. Cam doesn’t want to stay at the family mansion forever, but his wife falls in love with the house and the area. Everyone in this family has secrets, including Cam and Jules.
The characters in this thriller are well-developed. Each one has a set of secrets, and this adds to the story. The twists and turns will keep your interest as you turn page after page to find out what new secret will be revealed next. The ending is perfect for the story and shows insight into complex family relationships. Are any of these people who they say they are?
