Jeffery Deaver fans will be excited to read the newest offering in the Lincoln Rhyme series, The Midnight Lock. This latest installment has the usual cast of flawed characters as well as Deaver’s trademark plotline—the denouement comes at the very end, and there are multiple surprises.
Lincoln Rhyme, quadriplegic ex-cop criminalist, has a new quarry: a man who invades the dwellings of sleeping women, doing this not to harm their bodies but instead to mess with their minds. He moves their personal items around, helps himself to a snack, leaves a cryptic message printed on a page from the tabloid Daily Herald, and locks the door behind him when he exits. He is given the name The Locksmith as he picks locks to gain entry into his victims’ homes. Rhyme’s wife, detective Amelia Sachs, once again plays a starring role. She must help Lincoln investigate and identify this quarry.
Unfortunately, Lincoln and his team are fired from investigating due to political maneuverings. All law enforcers are prohibited from helping Lincoln in any way. Amelia has to find a way to work around this edict in order to keep her husband in the know.
The news that Averell Whittaker, the publisher of the aforementioned Daily Herald, is liquidating the tabloid adds a dimension to the story. His plans add new complications to capturing The Locksmith. The plot is stirred and thickened with each new revelation.
This 15th installment in the Lincoln Rhyme series shows once again that Jeffery Deaver is an excellent storyteller. His books are bestsellers, and he keeps his readers on pins on needles. His twists and turns will keep you turning the pages. Check out The Midnight Lock!
