Three Things about Elsie by Joanna Cannon

Updated: Nov 5, 2018

A person's life is not always what it seems to be as we learn in Joanna Cannon's novel "Three Things about Elsie." This heartwarming tale centers around Florence and Elsie, her friend since childhood. Florence lives at the Cherry Tree Home for the Elderly. The story begins with Florence having fallen on the floor of her flat where she awaits someone finding her. During her wait, she reflects on her past life and also on some curious events from the present.

Recently Cherry Tree has gained a new resident, but Florence is sure that he is actually a man that died in 1953. She knew him as Ronnie Butler but he is presenting himself as Gabriel Price. Ronnie was a violent man who harmed Elsie's family. Florence confides in fellow resident Jack who then joins Florence and Elsie as they try to uncover clues to the new resident's true identity. As the friends examine the past, Florence begins to remember events that she had either forgotten or repressed.

Which brings us to one of the things about Elsie. She always knows what to say to make Florence feel better. And she is always trying to nudge Florence's memory by getting her to recall facts from their shared past.

The adventures of these residents are often amusing yet eye-opening as we learn about Florence's past. We see how the people we love throughout our lives help to shape who we are. We also learn that even if a life is not "lived large," it can still leave a lasting impression on others. This novel will linger with you long after you read the last sentence.
